Building Site Storage Containers

Tools walk off building sites. So do copper, power tools, fixings and anything else that fits in a ute tray after hours. A lockable steel container on site is the cheapest insurance against that, and it keeps materials out of the weather at the same time. Bionic Storage hires building site storage containers across the Sunshine Coast in 10ft, 20ft and 40ft, delivered to your site from our Landsborough yard on our own trucks. This page covers the sizes builders actually use, what the hire includes, what the truck needs to get onto a working site, and how the hire handles a build that runs long.

Why Builders Put a Container on Site

A site container solves three problems at once. It secures tools and materials overnight and over the weekend, which is when sites are emptiest and losses happen. It keeps everything dry, because a wind and watertight container will hold up to Queensland weather in a way a locked shed or a tarped pallet will not. And it gives the crew one place to work from, so tools go back to the same spot rather than into the back of somebody’s vehicle.

Builders use them for power tools and hand tools, fixings and consumables, plumbing and electrical stock, tiles and fit-out materials waiting on a trade, plans and site documentation, and anything that has to sit on site between stages. Businesses outside construction hire them for the same reasons: stock overflow, equipment, and records that need to be somewhere lockable and dry.

Container Sizes for Building Sites

We hire 10ft, 20ft and 40ft containers, each available as a standard height or a high cube.

10ft Container

The 10ft is the site container for a tight block. It is three metres long externally, so it fits on a suburban residential build where a 20ft would eat the whole driveway. It holds a tradie’s tools and materials comfortably, and it hires at $120 per month on your site.

20ft Container

The 20ft is the workhorse and the default for most sites. It holds roughly ten standard Australian pallets at single height, so it takes a full tool fit-out with racking down one wall and still leaves floor space for materials. It hires from $77 per month on your site.

40ft Container

The 40ft suits larger commercial builds, a workshop with bench and racking, or large-scale site storage where a single secure point beats several. It hires at $165 per month on your site.

All our prices include GST, and delivery and pickup are quoted separately based on distance and site access. High cube is available across the range and adds extra internal height on the same footprint, which is worth it if you are stacking pallets or storing anything tall.

Security on an Active Site

Every container we hire comes with a lockbox fitted, which shields the padlock and makes it far harder to attack with bolt cutters. The containers themselves are double-lock door units in weather-resistant carbon steel with heavy-duty lock and key access, and each one is inspected for condition before it goes out.
Worth being straight about what a container does and does not do. It is a hardened, lockable steel box, and that is a serious deterrent on a site with no other security. It is not a monitored facility. The CCTV, gated access, sensor lights and on-site caretakers at our Landsborough yard protect containers stored with us, not a container sitting on your build. Position it where it is visible from the street or from a neighbouring occupied property if you can, keep the doors facing a wall or a fence so they cannot be swung open easily, and it will do its job.

What the Hire Includes

The hire includes the lockbox, full access to your container for the whole term, and a wind and watertight, ISO certified container. There is a 30 day minimum hire term, and past that the hire rolls month to month, which is the arrangement that suits a build program where the finish date moves.

Transport sits outside the monthly rate. Delivery and pickup are quoted separately based on distance and site access, so ask for both when you enquire and you can put the full figure into the job. A few other things also sit outside the standard hire and are worth knowing before you book: after-hours delivery, mid-term relocations, an end-of-hire clean if the container comes back dirty, site preparation and ground bearing, and a return-trip fee if the truck cannot get access on the delivery day.

Access is the one that catches sites out, so it is covered properly below.

What the Truck Needs on Site

Most container companies do not tell you this before they send a truck. On a working site, with a slab poured, materials stacked and other trades parked in, access is the thing that decides whether the delivery happens.

Our tilt trays deliver containers up to 20ft in length and cannot transport a 40ft container. Any 40ft delivery is a side loader job. The side loader unloads from the driver’s side of the truck with no tilting, which makes placement precise, but it needs genuine room to set up safely. As a general guide it requires:

  • approximately 20 metres of clear length
  • approximately 7 metres of total operating width, including the container
  • a driveway or access width of at least approximately 3 metres
  • firm, dry and reasonably level ground
  • sufficient clear space for the stabiliser legs to operate safely

A side loader is not the answer for a tight site simply because it lifts from the side. If your access does not meet the requirements above, a tilt tray is often the better option, within the 20ft limit.

Wherever the container lands it needs firm, dry, reasonably level ground. On a site mid-build, that usually means placing it early, before the slab goes down and while there is still open ground and a clear run in, rather than trying to squeeze it in once the frame is up. Heavy vehicle access and load limits on the day follow the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator rules.

Tell us the access width, the clear length available and the ground surface when you enquire and we will confirm the site works before we book the delivery.

Storing Between Stages

If the build pauses, or the container has to come off site before the next stage starts, we can hold it at our Landsborough facility rather than you finding somewhere for it. The yard is gated with 24/7 CCTV back to base monitoring, sensor lights, secure fencing, a six foot gate with pin code access and on-site caretakers, and access runs seven days a week, 365 days a year, from 5:00am to 7:00pm.

Because we own the containers, the trucks and the yard, that move is one phone call to one local team rather than a hire company, a transport broker and a storage provider. A container held at our yard is charged at our yard rate rather than the on-site rate, and mid-term relocations sit outside the standard hire, so let us know the plan and we will price it in.

One thing to flag for site use: goods stored at our facility cannot include anything flammable, explosive, hazardous or environmentally harmful, which rules out paint, petrol, acid and similar. If your site container is going to hold that sort of stock, raise it with us when you book so we can talk through the right arrangement.

Building Site Container Hire Across the Sunshine Coast

From our Landsborough base, just off the Bruce Highway, we deliver to sites right across the region, including Caloundra, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Buderim, Noosa, Nambour and Coolum. Because we run our own container transport out of the same yard as the containers, delivery and pickup stay quick and the transport cost stays sharp.

Why Builders Hire from Bionic

We are a Sunshine Coast operator, not a national hire chain with a call centre. We publish our monthly rates including GST rather than making you request a quote to find out what a container costs. We own the containers and the trucks, so the delivery is not brokered out to a carrier you have never spoken to. And we will tell you before the truck is booked whether your site access actually works, which is the difference between a container landing on schedule and a return-trip fee.

If the container is going to outlast the build, we also sell new and used containers and can talk through hire versus buy before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size storage container do I need on a building site?

A 10ft suits a tight residential block and holds a tradie’s tools and materials. A 20ft is the default for most sites, holding around ten standard pallets at single height plus a tool fit-out. A 40ft suits larger commercial builds. If in doubt, the 20ft is the safest choice.

How much does a building site storage container cost to hire?

On your site, a 10ft is $120 per month, a 20ft from $77 and a 40ft $165, and all our prices include GST. Delivery and pickup are quoted separately based on distance and site access, so ask for both figures when you enquire.

Is there a minimum hire period?

Yes, 30 days. After that the hire rolls month to month, so a container can stay as long as the build runs and go back with reasonable notice when you are done.

Can you deliver onto an active construction site?

Yes, provided there is firm, dry, reasonably level ground and room for the truck to get in and set down. Our tilt trays handle containers up to 20ft; a 40ft needs side loader access. Tell us the access width and clear length when you enquire and we will confirm before booking.

Can the container be moved to another site mid-hire?

Yes, but mid-term relocations sit outside the standard hire, so let us know and we will quote the move.

How secure are the containers?

Each container has double-lock doors, heavy-duty lock and key access and a lockbox fitted as part of the hire. On your site that is a hardened steel box, which is a strong deterrent, but it is not monitored. Containers stored at our Landsborough yard sit behind gated pin code access with 24/7 CCTV, sensor lights and on-site caretakers.

Is delivery included in the hire rate?

No. The monthly rate covers the container itself. Delivery and pickup are quoted separately based on distance and site access, and we will give you both figures together so the full cost is in the job before you commit.
